Edgar the Eaglet (continued)
“You will never savour the wonderful smell of a pine forest, or perhaps find other friends or a partner who makes your heart soar. Now tell me, can you find any of these experiences here in the middle of the nest? If you learn to fly, if you go over the edge, you can have all these things, and still have the middle of the nest.”
The time had come for Edgar to try to fly. “Think about what I just told you.” his mother said. So Edgar closed his eyes and thought about the hills and the valleys, the clear bright water, the snow, even the blop, blop of the mud flats. The nest was still safe and warm; however, after hearing about all the amazing things which lay out beyond its edge, the nest did not feel like it was enough. As Edgar thought about the adventures that lay ahead, he felt his heart grow lighter. His eyes were closed, he could hear his mother near him, her strong wings beating above him. Woosh, woosh, he felt the air rush beneath his wings, he felt himself being lifted up. Edgar knew in his heart, that the time had come for him to leave the middle of the nest.
