
Making Connections (continued)
For God not only promises abundant life, but directs and supports the pursuit of it, “Those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the good news, will save it.” Only by focusing on the good news of God’s abiding and loving presence, could Jesus make it through the difficult times that would lead to his final destination—the transformation of the world.
History teaches us the truth of Jesus’ statement. Where would our communities be if we had not taken a risk on granting equality for women, abolishing slavery, or had not striven for principles like democracy, the rights of all people for justice, or a responsible relationship with creation? Before these became a part of the fabric of our lives, there were those who thought all was well in the world. Indeed, these principles challenged some strongly held beliefs and worldviews. In fact, there are still some communities who fail to see the importance of these principles, who in spite of the strife and squalor, believe all is well.
The law of inertia reminds us that a body at rest needs a push to get going. That push for many of us comes in believing that there is more to life, and taking that all important first step on the journey. It is acting on that covenant of trust that God has made with all people—that God blesses those involved in enhancing the lives of others, building bridges between individuals, peoples, and taking care of others and creation.
