Wally the Dachshund (Continued)
After Wally had calmed down, he was quite sad and a little discouraged, he was afraid to do his job now. Who would bark out warnings if he did not? Wally had to show the boy and the man that he had a very important job to do, he had to show them that this was his territory. It was obvious that they were not afraid of a little wiener dog. Then Wally had an idea, he would go visit his friend Duke, the great Dane. Duke was taller than the man and the boy, perhaps they would listen to him.
It wouldn’t be enough for Duke to simply go over and bark at them, that would make it Duke’s job to continue guarding Wally’s territory, for they still wouldn’t respect the little dachshund. Something else had to be done.
The next day the boy and the man were back, they were moving things, breaking things and building things. Wally decided to go back to work as well, so he started barking out his warnings. He even started barking at the boy again, for he knew that Duke was nearby. Just as the boy was about to turn around to frighten Wally again, Wally barked out a quick “yip” and Duke bounded over the hedge behind which he was hiding, and let out a great “WOOF”. The boy ran and jumped into the truck (he didn’t know that Duke was really very gentle and wouldn’t hurt anyone—and that was exactly what Wally hoped he wouldn’t know).
The plan worked. For as long as they were there, the boy and
the man let Wally do his job, while they did theirs.
