Hamish Takes a Chance (continued)
Hamish thought about what the owl said. The land of greyish-red soil.… The land next to the western meadow where the hares lived was greyish red. The hares never had much use for it, because it stained their fur and was very sandy. There was no place to run or hide there. Perhaps the hares had missed something about that land. Perhaps they should try planting something in the greyish-red soil instead and see what happens. Hamish knew exactly what they could plant—carrots!
Hamish went back to the meadow, and with the help of some other hares, cleared some of the greyish-red land to make room for their carrots to grow. To everyone’s surprise and delight the carrots which grew there were ten times bigger than any they had seen. The hares all agreed that they were the sweetest carrots ever eaten in the western meadow.
