Hamish Takes a Chance (continued)
“Stories mostly. That’s why I wanted to talk to you. We have a story about a corner of the forest where there are seven fox holes in a row in a hollow around an ancient oak tree. You fly to so many different places, and have seen so many things, I was wondering if you had ever seen seven fox holes around an ancient oak tree.”
“And why are these holes important? Food I suppose.”
“Er, no, wisdom actually. The story says that whoever finds the holes will discover a great secret.”
“This isn’t a legend is it?” asked Lucinda. Lucinda the goose didn’t take much stock in legends. “Well, it’s your life. I have seen something like what your story describes. At the South end of this pond is a small creek, follow the creek for about a day, you will reach a small water fall, there is a clearing to the East of the fall where a giant oak is surrounded by a number of foxes, whether there are seven, I cannot say. But I have seen quite a few foxes around there.” “Thank you and Good luck on your journey.” Hamish replied politely.
“Thank you, little … er … Hamish, is it.” With that she began to flap her great wings and flew into the sky continuing her migration north.
After some thought, Hamish decided to take a chance on the legend, hoping that it was the tree that Lucinda described. He packed a few things and headed out in the direction that the Goose had told him.
Hamish found the spot by mid-afternoon of the next day. He began to cautiously investigate the area, as he did not want to bother the foxes.
